Joint and Muscle Sprain & Strains

Many people who visit chiropractors do so for injuries related to soft tissue known as sprains or strains. Although these types of injuries are not always considered particularly severe, it is important to treat and rehabilitate the injury so that it doesn’t lead to further problems later in life. For example, in some cases, a back problem could have stemmed from a previous sprain that was never sufficiently addressed. This is because a sprain or strain can then lead to an altered gait pattern which, over time, can degenerate other important joints, such as the knee or hip.

A sprain is a joint injury that involves stretching or tearing of the ligaments and joint capsule. Sprains occur most often in the lower back, ankle, knee, elbow, or wrist and symptoms include:

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Soreness
  • Swelling

Depending on the severity of the injury, a strain may be a simple overstretch of a muscle or tendon, or it can be as severe as a partial or complete tear. Strains often happen in the muscles that support the neck, low back, calf, thigh, groin, and shoulder and symptoms include:

  • Immediate pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Restricted movement at the joint
  • Joint instability

When receiving treatment at the Amethyst Clinic we aim to restore muscle strength and control not only of that particular joint but of the ones above and below it also. As with many chiropractic treatments, the focus is on addressing the whole issue as opposed to the individual problem, as any discomfort with one joint will affect the movement of the joints and muscles around it.

In addition to joint manipulation and mobilisation, chiropractors use other treatment methods for sprains and strains. The care will combine basic methods such as the common RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) with more complex treatments such as ultrasound, cross friction massage, heat treatment and strapping for support. Chiropractors will also design a rehabilitation programme which will include stretching and strengthening exercises to aid your recovery.

You can be assured the techniques we use are proven to give you the best possible treatment, to get you back to full health as quickly as possible.
