What is Hypnotherapy with CBT?

Hypnotherapy is the combination of hypnosis and psychotherapy – two distinct therapeutic approaches that complement each other in terms of both theory and practice.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a way of understanding:

  • How you think about yourself, the world and other people
  • How your thoughts influence your feelings and behaviour

The treatment begins by developing an understanding of the whole ‘experience’ of your problem and of all the areas of your life that are affected by it. Once these aspects are understood hypnotherapy then works to develop your ‘solution state’, which relates to all of the ways that life will be better once you are rid of the current problem. My solution-focused approach ensures that we are not merely looking at the absence of negatives, but the presence of positives.

Once a thorough history has been taken hypnosis will be employed to suppress your conscious mind and allow the subconscious mind to emerge. In this state you will be more receptive to new ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations, the seeds of which become firmly planted in your subconscious mind.

You will be given exercises and activities as well as a hypnosis CD for you continue to engage with between sessions. This clinical treatment method is entirely natural, completely free of side-effects and has a wealth of good research evidence to support its effectiveness.

CBT can help you to change how you think and what you do. Rather than focusing on the causes of your distress or symptoms in the past, it looks for ways to improve your state of mind and move you toward your ‘solution state’.

Good research evidence tells us that when CBT is combined with hypnosis its effect becomes magnified; it works more quickly and remains effective for much longer periods of time. This is because when you are under hypnosis – that is to say when you are relaxed in your mind and body – you can rehearse new patterns of thinking, elicit more positive emotions and see yourself acting in different ways, all in a safe environment that can breed confidence in your ability to become the person that you want to be.
