Anxiety

We all experience some level of anxiety, but for some these levels of anxiety can become unhealthily high. For these people, anxiety is a daily experience, occurring when our minds become uncontrollably worried about issues in our day-to-day life, such as our work, our family or an important upcoming event.

The physical symptoms of anxiety are troublesome and unpleasant and can include:

  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • A high pulse rate
  • Muscle tension
  • Trembling
  • An inability to relax

After some time these symptoms can then cause us to have poor sleep patterns, become impatient or irritable and lead to low confidence and low self-esteem.

Panic attacks differ from other forms of anxiety as they are relatively short periods of intense fear, which tend to appear very suddenly. First time sufferers often feel they are experiencing a heart attack or breakdown, as the experience can be so frightening and upsetting.

The symptoms of panic attacks are often more extreme than those experienced with general anxiety. Panic attacks almost always cause:

  • Hyperventilation
  • Nauseous
  • Faint
  • Trembling
  • Heart palpitations
  • Sensations of choking
  • Chest pain

Hypnotherapy can help by training you to recognise when you are about to experience these anxious feelings and thoughts so that you can use relaxation and coping strategies to maintain control of the stressful situation.

By receiving cognitive behavioural therapy with hypnosis you will have methods and tools to look at the situations that are creating the stress, allowing you to make changes to your life so that you can be the person in control once more.

Once the underlying cause of the attacks is discovered the hypnotherapist will work closely with the client to teach them techniques that will enable them to control and overcome the attack. This could involve teaching the client self-hypnosis or using therapeutic techniques to enable them to come to terms with their major sources of stress in their life.
