Depression

Depression can be a debilitating long-term condition creating great distress to the person experiencing the symptoms. It is not unusual for a person to take some time to recognise that they may be depressed, as it can often come on gradually and some people continue to deal with the symptoms of depression without recognising them.

Any one or more of the issues outlined below can be a symptom of depression if the sufferer has experienced them on a long-term basis.

  • A sad or depressed mood
  • Loss of interest in day to day activities
  • Problems with sleep patterns
  • A poor appetite and weight loss or an overactive appetite and weight gain
  • Loss of energy and general fatigue
  • Negative feelings of self worth
  • Feelings of guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Slowed movement or speech
  • Unexplained aches or pains which appear to have no physical cause
  • Lack of motivation or interest in things
  • Tearfulness
  • Increased anxiety

Hypnotherapy for depression is an entirely natural therapy and can be used for ego strengthening, confidence building and deep relaxation. Where appropriate a hypnotherapist may also be able to help their client find the underlying cause of depression if it is unknown. Once the reason for the depression is understood it allows the therapist to help their client process that underlying emotion so that its negative impact can be reduced or removed. Coping strategies and tools can also be taught so that negative thought patterns are replaced with more positive thoughts and feelings.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the most effective treatments for depression and is a way of talking about how you think about yourself, your environment and the people within it. Using CBT you can also discuss what it is that affects your thoughts and feelings and once you understand the factors that are causing your depression, CBT can help you make positive changes to overcome it.
